Clary Lore Centential: 1910-2010

I’ve noticed that the “Clary Lore” section tends to attract a few (and quite often very lost) visitors who wish to learn more about this particular instance or “domain” of Clary-ness.  Since I”m in a bit of hurry, I figured I would use a “timeline” to help me get started.  Maybe, over time, this will grow with contributions from Clary’s and Lipkau’s and Walter’s from around the world who may “fill in the blanks” on many things worth (or not) remembering.

1910-1920 My father, Fynis Clary (1918-1992) was born in Valdosta, Georgia to Clara Clary (he is one of 7 brothers and 2 sisters, btw).  I hope to eventurally fill in the blanks here on all their names, such as Ellis Clary (1916-2000) to name but one.

1920-1930 On the 11th day, of the 11th month of the 26th year of the 20th century, my mother, Carmen Lipkau (1926-2006) was born (she had a sister and a brother) to Pilar and Fernando Lipkau in El Castillo, Spain.  Meanwhile Clara moved the Clary family from Valdosta, GA to Hallandale, FL and ran a boarding house, just a block or so north of Hallandale Beach Boulevard, about 6 blocks west of Dixie Highway.   In 1926, the Clary’s had their house destroyed (and were forever traumatized) by what would eventually by called the 1926 Miami Hurricane. Clara took her family back north, stopping in Lake City, Florida, as one of the sons got a job with one of the four railroad companies that junctioned there.  Meanwhile, the rest of the family moved back to Valdosta and Clara opened up another boarding house.

1930-1940  Civil War erupted in Spain, starting in 1936 and ending in 1939.  Carmen and Fernando Lipkau relocated Carmen, and her sister Ana, to a convent in southern France, at a town called Perpignan.  My mother told me of hearing bombs whistling down from aircraft as she and her family rode into France.  She also mentioned how strict the nuns were at the convent.  But she also fondly remembered when they took the girls out for field trips into the french countryside.  Both Ana and my mother learned to be fluent French speakers.
